As Thanksgiving approaches, officials in Montgomery County are intensifying efforts to prevent impaired driving during the holiday season. The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), in collaboration with the County’s Police and Alcohol Beverage Services, is urging residents to refrain from drinking and driving, particularly on the night before Thanksgiving, a time notorious for increased alcohol consumption.
MCDOT Director Chris Conklin emphasized the necessity for safe travel plans. “We expect to see a record number of drivers on the road this year, and that, along with the early evening darkness and an increase in alcohol consumption, can lead to deadly consequences,” he stated in a recent news release. To facilitate safe transportation, Conklin encouraged the use of the zero-fare Ride On buses available throughout the county.
Holiday Task Force Mobilizes for Enhanced Safety
In addition to these preventive measures, the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) has announced the deployment of a “Holiday Task Force.” This initiative, which began on November 19, 2023, will continue until January 10, 2026, and aims to deter impaired driving through sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols. MCPD Chief Marc Yamada affirmed the commitment to public safety, stating, “Our Holiday Task Force will be out in full force to identify and stop impaired drivers, because these collisions are entirely preventable.”
Last year, similar efforts led to the arrest of 238 drivers and the issuance of 2,773 citations for traffic violations related to impaired driving. The proactive approach reflects the county’s dedication to reducing the risks associated with holiday festivities.
Community Collaboration for Safer Celebrations
The Montgomery County Department of Alcohol Beverage Services is also playing a critical role in this initiative. Director Kathie Durbin highlighted the importance of responsible service at licensed establishments, noting that staff are trained to recognize signs of intoxication and avoid overserving patrons.
This collaborative effort between regulatory authorities, law enforcement, and local businesses aims to create a safer environment for all community members during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. Residents looking for alternative transportation options can visit the County’s Vision Zero website for information on local safe rides.
For further updates on Montgomery County’s traffic safety initiatives and additional resources, individuals are encouraged to explore the official MCDOT website and follow their social media channels on Bluesky, Facebook, and Instagram. By planning ahead and utilizing available resources, the community can work together to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
