Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School Commemorates 50 Years with Community Powwow

Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School marked a significant milestone on November 21, 2023, celebrating its 50th anniversary with a vibrant community powwow. The event brought together students, families, and local community members to honor the school’s rich history and its role in the Leech Lake community.

The celebration commenced with a grand entry led by the Leech Lake Honor Guard, who presented the colors in a ceremony that set a respectful tone for the day. Attendees participated in various cultural activities, including intertribals, spot dances, and a much-anticipated Woodlands Dance Contest. This contest was sponsored by Gerald White and Kaiden Urrutia, two staff members who are passionate about preserving and sharing the Woodlands dance style.

The powwow not only highlighted the school’s commitment to cultural education but also served as a platform to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions over the years. During the festivities, John Parmeter was honored for his dedication and service to the school. After 35 years in various roles, Parmeter received a plaque, a blanket, and an honor song, celebrating his legacy and commitment to education.

The anniversary event underscored the importance of community and cultural identity, reflecting the values that have been integral to Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School since its inception. As the school looks to the future, the celebration reaffirmed its mission to provide a supportive and enriching environment for all students.
