Ruth C. (Kenney) Magnuson, a beloved member of the Portland community, passed away on November 28, 2025, at the age of 94, surrounded by her family. Her life was characterized by dedication to her family, a love for her community, and a passion for the activities she cherished.
Born in Arlington, Massachusetts, to George J. W. Kenney and Ina S. Kenney, Ruth graduated from Arlington High School in 1948. She married the Rev. Robert H. Magnuson in 1953, embarking on a journey that took them to various Lutheran congregations across the United States, including those in Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts, before settling in Portland, Maine.
A Life Filled with Passion and Service
Ruth’s childhood was marked by joyful memories, including roller skating down steep dirt roads and developing a lifelong love for the Boston Red Sox. Her enthusiasm for baseball made her a vibrant conversationalist, often engaging others in discussions about the game.
Professionally, Ruth dedicated 30 years to her career at Campbell, Payson and Noyes/Commercial Union Insurance. Beyond her work, she actively contributed to her community. Ruth was involved in her church’s sewing group, served as a Girl Scout cookie mother, and held the role of election official for many years. Her vibrant personality and inquisitive nature made her a cherished friend and correspondent, as she maintained a prolific exchange of letters with friends and family.
Ruth’s family was her pride and joy. She is survived by her children Karen M. Fitzgerald of Westbrook, Robert E. Magnuson of South Portland, Cynthia R. Magnuson of Portland, and Christopher S. Magnuson (with Jana R. Magnuson) of Portland. She also leaves behind two grandchildren, Kathryn F. Gaudet of Erving, Massachusetts, and Caroline F. Johnson of Cumberland, as well as five great-grandchildren: Philip R. Gaudet, Joseph W. Gaudet, Zachary R. Johnson, and twins Allison C. Johnson and Abigail S. Johnson.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents, her former husband, siblings John, Virginia, George Jr., and Robert Kenney, and son-in-law Edouard G. DuPlessis.
Visitation and Memorial Contributions
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at a visitation scheduled for December 3, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home, located at 199 Woodford Street in Portland. A private interment will follow.
