The Atlanta Braves have signed left-handed reliever Danny Young to a split contract, aiming to bolster their bullpen depth as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. The announcement was made on Tuesday, marking a strategic move for the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Young, 31, underwent the elbow procedure in May 2023, and while recovery timelines typically range from 12 to 18 months, his return date remains uncertain. The split contract allows Young to earn different amounts depending on whether he plays in the Major Leagues or the Minor Leagues.
Over the course of his career, Young has maintained a 4.01 ERA, along with a 29 percent strikeout rate and a 9.3 percent walk rate across 63 career appearances, totaling 60 and two-thirds innings. His performance peaked in the 2024 MLB season when he made a career-high 42 appearances for the New York Mets before being sidelined later in the season. Following this period, the Mets opted to non-tender him in December 2023.
The Braves have prior experience with Young, having previously signed him in 2022 and 2023. During his last season with the organization, he made eight big league appearances, adding to his familiarity with the team’s dynamics.
As the Braves look ahead, Young’s potential return could offer a valuable addition to their bullpen, pending his recovery progress. His experience in the league and prior affiliation with the Braves may provide a competitive edge as the team gears up for another season.
