A local nonprofit organization, Kids Excel with Pets, has initiated a donation drive aimed at providing food and toys for the Washington Area Humane Society. Running through December 23, the campaign is part of the organization’s annual community outreach program.
Founded in 2020 by Rebecca Simpson, Kids Excel with Pets primarily focuses on spaying and neutering animals. However, its mission extends to raising awareness about the positive impact that pets can have on children’s development. Simpson emphasizes that fostering a loving relationship with pets can enhance children’s self-esteem and teach them responsibility.
“Positive relationships with pets can aid in a child’s development of building trusting relationships with others,” Simpson explained. The donation drive is named “Lilly’s Christmas Wish,” after a dog recently adopted by a board member. This initiative aims to support animals in need, particularly those rescued from abusive situations, which reflects Lilly’s own background.
“I thought this would be a cute thing to do,” Simpson added, noting that the Washington Area Humane Society is a reputable organization. “That’s a very professional outfit. I would like to help them.”
In previous years, Kids Excel with Pets has organized various charitable efforts, such as sending presents to military members stationed overseas and conducting a toy drive for children impacted by a hurricane in North Carolina. Simpson’s commitment to helping others during the holiday season is deeply personal. Since the tragic death of her daughter, Kelly Patterson, in a car accident in 1987, she has felt a strong compulsion to give back.
“I always would give on her birthday and on Christmas to an organization … I just wouldn’t feel right not doing something special for her,” Simpson shared. The organization’s logo is based on a childhood drawing by Patterson, adding a sentimental touch to its mission.
Looking ahead, Simpson indicated that “Lilly’s Christmas Wish” will continue into next year, with plans to start the donation drive earlier. Those wishing to contribute can send monetary donations to Kids Excel with Pets Inc. at P.O. Box 1641, Washington, PA, 15301-7641, until December 23.
In addition to monetary donations, Simpson encourages the community to consider adopting animals from the humane society. She expressed hope that her outreach efforts might inspire individuals to provide a loving home to dogs in need this Christmas season. “Maybe we could get some people to go down to the humane society and adopt some of these dogs for Christmas,” she said.
The initiative aims not only to support animals but also to foster a sense of community and compassion during the holiday season.
