URGENT UPDATE: Roger and Nancy Bowman of Lenhartsville have just been awarded the prestigious 2025 Friend of 4-H Award by Lehigh County 4-H for their unwavering commitment to agriculture and youth development. Their dedication has profoundly impacted countless 4-H members across Berks and Lehigh counties.
This recognition highlights over three decades of service as Berks County 4-H leaders, where the Bowmans play a pivotal role in shaping the future of young agricultural enthusiasts. Currently active with the Lehigh County 4-H Livestock Club alongside their grandsons, their influence continues to grow. The couple purchased their farm in Lenhartsville in 1973, focusing on raising purebred Corriedale and Dorset sheep, which they still exhibit at major events like the Allentown Fair and the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
The Bowmans’ impact extends beyond livestock; they have spearheaded educational initiatives that have enriched the lives of local youth. For 20 years, they have served as sheep and goat superintendents at the Allentown Fair, guiding young participants through sheep and goat registration at the Schnecksville Fair. Their commitment to education was showcased during the Allentown Fair Agricultural Day, where they taught thousands of elementary students about sheep and wool.
In a significant move to enhance hands-on learning, the Bowmans launched an annual shawl project with the Lehigh County 4-H Livestock Club in 2022. By donating yarn, equipment, and instructional support, they enable members to experience the complete sheep-to-shawl process. Over the past four years, this initiative has raised an impressive $9,550 for eight local charities through shawl auctions at the club’s Round-Up Sale.
Their contributions also include hosting workshops on wool grading and sheep breed characteristics, empowering 4-H livestock and skillathon teams throughout the state. The Bowmans’ unwavering dedication to agricultural education has equipped numerous 4-H youth with essential knowledge and confidence.
