Colfax-Mingo Suffers Defeat in Season Opener Against Woodward Academy

The Colfax-Mingo boys basketball team opened its season with a challenging home match against Woodward Academy on November 6, 2023. The Tigerhawks struggled significantly, resulting in a lopsided final score of 77-27. A combination of a slow start and an alarming total of 23 turnovers hampered their performance.

Colfax-Mingo’s defense faltered early, allowing Woodward Academy to score a staggering 46 points in the first half. The Tigerhawks managed only 12 points in the second half, contributing to a disappointing shooting percentage of nearly 24 percent overall. They failed to convert any of their four attempts from beyond the arc and made 7-of-12 free throws.

Jace Lewis led the Tigerhawks with nine points, while teammates Wyatt Jay and Izaiah Lewis each contributed six points along with six rebounds. Additionally, Camden Cunningham secured six rebounds, and Weston Boehm recorded four points and two rebounds in his varsity debut. Gage Byal added two rebounds and three assists, while Wyatt Thornton grabbed three boards. Royal Collins also made his varsity debut during the game.

Woodward Academy, boasting a 1-0 record following the victory, dominated throughout. The Knights established a 23-8 lead by the end of the first quarter and extended this to 46-15 by halftime. The team showcased its offensive prowess, shooting an impressive 59 percent from the field. They connected on 8-of-19 attempts from three-point range and committed only ten turnovers.

Leading the charge for Woodward Academy was Benny Doe, who delivered a standout performance with 17 points, nine assists, and six steals. Four Knights reached double figures in scoring, contributing to a well-rounded offensive display.
