Holiday Lights Fundraiser Shines Bright in Decorah, Iowa

The annual Holiday Lights fundraiser organized by Helping Services for Youth and Families transformed Pulpit Rock Campground into a vibrant spectacle of twinkling lights on November 26, 2023. This event marked the nonprofit’s largest fundraising effort of the year, aimed at supporting a variety of vital programs, including mentoring and substance abuse services.

Preparations for the Holiday Lights display began in early November, with volunteers working diligently to install numerous lighted structures. Each display is sponsored by local businesses, with many featuring alternating images that create an animated effect, captivating visitors of all ages. The event is designed not only to raise funds but also to foster community spirit during the festive season.

This year, the organizers implemented enhanced safety measures by closing a portion of Pulpit Rock Road to vehicle traffic during the walk-through night. This change allowed families to enjoy the light displays more comfortably. Attendees parked at Will Baker Park and had the option to either walk the scenic riverside trail or take a shuttle bus to the illuminated campground.

As families meandered through the displays, they were treated to more than just breathtaking lights. The event featured a selection of seasonal delights, including soup, hot cocoa, cookies, and other festive treats. Live holiday music performed by local carolers added to the cheerful atmosphere, while children enjoyed rides on the Decorah Lions Club’s miniature train, affectionately named Pokey Pete.

The Holiday Lights display remains open for drive-through visitors from 17:00 to 21:00 each night between Thanksgiving and Christmas, providing an opportunity for even more community members to experience the festive spirit.

Overall, the annual Holiday Lights fundraiser not only serves as a critical source of funding for Helping Services for Youth and Families but also strengthens community ties, creating cherished memories for families during the holiday season.
