Urgent: Hit-and-Run Investigation Launched in South Austin

UPDATE: A horrific hit-and-run incident in South Austin has prompted an urgent investigation after a moped rider suffered serious injuries. Police are now actively searching for two drivers who fled the scene following the crash that occurred on November 10, 2023, around 6:30 PM in the 700 block of West William Cannon Drive.

Authorities report that the moped rider was rushed to a local hospital with severe injuries, sparking a call for public assistance in identifying the vehicles involved. The Austin Police Department (APD) is particularly focused on two suspect vehicles: a dark-colored pickup truck and a silver sedan.

According to investigators, the first vehicle, believed to be a 2015–2022 Chevrolet Colorado with a bed cover, struck the moped rider. As the victim lay on the ground, a silver sedan then ran over the individual. Police confirmed that both drivers, a woman in the pickup and a man in the sedan, did not stop to offer help.

Detectives are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward. They have released images of the vehicles and are asking the public to assist in the investigation. The pickup truck is expected to have visible front-right damage, making it easier to identify.

Anyone with details or who recognizes the vehicles is encouraged to submit an anonymous tip to Capital Area Crime Stoppers at austincrimestoppers.org or by calling 512-472-8477. Tips leading to an arrest may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000. Additionally, police are requesting that anyone with video, photos, or dashcam footage related to the crash preserve that material for investigators.

As this investigation unfolds, the community is urged to stay vigilant and assist in bringing the responsible parties to justice. The well-being of the injured rider remains a priority as police continue their search for the hit-and-run drivers.
