URGENT UPDATE: Starting tomorrow, December 20, 2024, Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport will implement nightly closures of Runway 4R from 8 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. Travelers flying into the island are urged to adjust their schedules as this critical work is set to continue through Saturday.
The Hawai’i Department of Transportation (HDOT) announced these closures are essential for completing the HNL Runway and Taxiway Shoulder Rehabilitation project. This upgrade is vital for maintaining safe airport operations and follows a timeline that began in February 2024. Despite aiming for completion in October, unforeseen weather delays have pushed the project into its final stages.
During these closures, late arrivals will be redirected to utilize Runway 8L or the Reef Runway, which may lead to increased noise levels impacting residents in the ‘Ewa Plain. HDOT acknowledges the inconvenience and appreciates community patience during this necessary work.
“HDOT appreciates the community’s patience and understanding while the needed work is conducted to ensure safe operations at HNL,”
the department stated in their official release.
As upgrades commence, travelers are advised to stay informed about their flight schedules and potential delays. With these urgent improvements, the airport aims to enhance safety and efficiency for all who pass through.
