Don Griswold has resigned as the head coach of the Keystone High School football team after nine seasons, a decision he announced on December 7, 2025. Under his leadership, the Wildcats became a formidable presence in the Lorain County League, securing four championships during his tenure.
Griswold shared his decision via social media, expressing gratitude for the support he received from players, families, and the community. “Coaching at Keystone has been one of the greatest honors of my career,” he stated. He acknowledged the challenges of balancing coaching, teaching, and family responsibilities, saying, “I can no longer meet those expectations at the level our students and family deserve. I am tired — emotionally, physically and spiritually.”
During his time at Keystone, Griswold accumulated an impressive record of 49 wins and 32 losses, solidifying his status as one of the school’s top coaches. His predecessor, Rob Clarico, holds the record for the most wins at the school with 60 victories. Griswold’s leadership led the Wildcats to capture Lorain County League championships in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2024.
Legacy and Impact
Griswold reflected on the impact that coaching had on his life and the lives of the players he mentored. “Stepping away is difficult because I have been part of this program as a coach for nearly 20 years,” he remarked. He highlighted the strong culture built by the team, emphasizing qualities such as toughness, gratitude, unity, and love.
His coaching legacy includes guiding several players who advanced to collegiate football, with notable names like Ryne Shackelford, who played for Baylor University, and linebacker Gideon Lampron, who went on to play for Bowling Green State University. Griswold’s influence extended beyond the field; he helped players like Lampron and Jacob Shackelford earn prestigious awards, including the Golden Helmet and Matt Wilhelm awards.
The Wildcats concluded Griswold’s final season with a record of 6-4, finishing 5-2 in the Lorain County League. As Keystone prepares for a new chapter, the community reflects on the significant contributions made by Griswold, whose commitment to the program and its players has left an enduring mark.
