Falcons and Mustangs Triumph in Thrilling High School Basketball Matches

West Rowan’s girls basketball team maintained their undefeated streak with a narrow 69-66 victory over North Iredell on December 1, 2023. The standout player was Tiara Thompson, who scored a remarkable career-high of 35 points. Her performance included 12 free throws and three successful three-pointers, with 14 points coming in the crucial fourth quarter.

Head coach Ashley Poole praised Thompson’s performance, noting, “Tiara was clutch at the foul line in the fourth quarter.” Also contributing to the Falcons’ success was Aubrey Martin, who added 13 points with three three-pointers of her own. Both Thompson and Martin, who are seniors, missed last season due to different circumstances, with Thompson transferring and Martin sidelined by injury.

Currently, the Falcons boast a record of 5-0, while North Iredell falls to 3-2. West Rowan played without Sydney Smith, which added pressure to the remaining players. The scoring breakdown for West Rowan included: Thompson 35, Martin 13, Hurd 7, Allen 6, Sawyer 4, Hoffner 2, and Pharr 2.

In another exciting matchup, East Rowan’s girls basketball team secured a 49-43 non-conference win against Mount Pleasant. The star of the game was Lily Kluttz, who achieved a career-high of 24 points, surpassing her previous best of 14 points. Jaelyn Earnhardt contributed 8 points, while Bristol Smith added 7 points for the Mustangs, who improved their record to 3-3 with this victory.

The match was closely contested throughout. East Rowan held a slim lead of 25-22 at halftime. Mount Pleasant, currently at 2-5, had a strong performance from MacKenzie Clutter, who scored 22 points in the losing effort. The scoring details for Mount Pleasant included: Clutter 22, Leonard 8, Overbay 6, Violette 3, Ray 2, and Allred 2.
