The Lakeview girls basketball team is poised to build on its first winning season in a decade as they enter the 2023-2024 season under the leadership of newly appointed head coach Aaron Whalen. After finishing last season with a record of 13-11 and securing a fourth-place finish in the Central State Activities Association (CSAA) White conference, the Wildcats are eager to continue their progress.
Whalen, who brings a wealth of experience from coaching tournament-level teams such as Courthouse and MVP in Grand Rapids, is stepping into his first role within the K-12 education system. He is optimistic about the potential of his team, which has only one senior player, Katelyn Buchner. “Our numbers are small, but they work really hard,” Whalen stated. “They’re very eager to keep working and just play as a team.”
Buchner echoed Whalen’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of developing chemistry on the court. “I feel like we’re definitely still getting used to each other a little bit,” she said. “Once we start fully understanding each other, we’re going to be good defenders and very effective on offense.”
The Wildcats faced their share of challenges last season, but their determination and adaptability have been key assets. With two of their five starters returning, including Buchner and junior Madison Bristol, the team is looking to leverage their experience to guide newer players. Buchner noted, “We’ll kind of have that little advantage of showing the people who haven’t been on the team before what they can expect.”
Whalen has established a culture focused on the players’ experiences, stating, “This is about their experience, not mine.” He has been working to create an environment where players feel valued and encouraged. “They’ve been very receptive,” he added. “So far, they’ve got great attitudes.”
The Wildcats’ success last year was partly attributed to their strong ball-handling skills, which Buchner hopes to replicate this season. “The way we were able to carry the ball down the court last season was such a big thing for us,” she said.
As the only senior on the team, Buchner is stepping into a leadership role, striving to enhance her communication skills and confidence. “Taking part and actually being a captain is helping me develop more,” she explained. Whalen praised her leadership, stating, “Katelyn is a natural leader, and the girls respect her.”
Looking ahead, the Wildcats have set ambitious goals for the upcoming season. Buchner believes that fans can expect significant progress. “Our defense is going to grow tremendously, and our offense will thrive once we start fully understanding it,” she said. Whalen is also excited about the season, emphasizing the need for the team to compete consistently. “You can expect us to compete every week and see us gel well together,” he said.
The team’s schedule includes a series of challenging match-ups that will test their growth. With only two games already played, expectations are high for the Wildcats. “I think we’re going to be a pretty solid team this season,” Buchner concluded.
As Lakeview’s girls basketball team embarks on this new chapter, they are determined to build on their recent success and foster a positive, competitive environment. Whalen’s focus on player development and teamwork may just be the recipe for a memorable season ahead.
