Operation Christmas Star Delivers 4,000+ Toys in Merced County

UPDATE: Operation Christmas Star has just delivered over 4,000 toys to children in Merced County, California, bringing early holiday joy during these challenging times. The initiative, which took place on December 14-15, 2023, involved dedicated volunteers collecting and wrapping toys for children in need, ensuring a memorable Christmas experience.

The event is a collaboration between the Merced County Sheriff’s Office, the Probation Department, and Cal Fire, marking their eighth year of partnership. “For me, it’s all about the smiles and just seeing the excitement on their face,” said Maurice Celestine from Cal Fire. “Right now, times are hard, and it feels good to give back to the community.”

Toys were personally delivered to families, creating heartfelt moments that underscored the spirit of giving. Deputy Alexandra Britton remarked, “It’s just a wholesome moment because they also perceive us in a different way. We are here to give them back something, and they’re happy.”

Among the beneficiaries was Sarah Baker, a mother of four from Planada, who expressed her gratitude, stating, “Some people lost everything. For me, I lost everything. And a lot of people helped out.” Her emotional response highlights the significant impact of community support following personal hardships, such as her family’s recovery from a devastating flood.

Another mother, Courtnie Cuteri, shared her tears of joy as her two children received gifts this year. “The economy has been rough; the paychecks haven’t been really making it,” she said, emphasizing the critical nature of these donations.

Residents like Antonio Rodriguez praised the initiative, saying, “They bring a lot of smiles to a lot of kids here in Planada. They are doing a great job.” The overwhelming joy and appreciation from families demonstrate the positive effect of community-driven efforts during the holiday season.

As Operation Christmas Star wraps up its impactful two-day event, the focus remains on the smiles created and the hearts touched in Merced County. With the holiday season underway, the community looks forward to more initiatives that uplift and support those in need.
