URGENT UPDATE: Over 700 children received gifts today at the highly anticipated Christmas in the Southland event in Matteson, Illinois. This annual program, now in its fourth year, took place at the Matteson Community Center, providing vital support for families in need during the holiday season.
Six-year-old Karis Smith was among the eager children, expressing her hopes for a big puppet from Santa Claus. While she awaits her Christmas wish, the event saw thousands of gifts distributed to children and families from the surrounding areas. Founder Larry Huggins announced that this is the second-largest toy drive in the nation, trailing only behind Toys for Tots. This year, the program aimed to serve 2,000 children from 700 families.
Children aged 9 and under were first to choose from the bounty of toys. “I love getting gifts,” said Karis after securing a Shine & Style Nail Studio kit. As the excitement built, a raffle followed, featuring prizes including televisions, Xboxes, computers, and bicycles. Local resident Monica Patterson, who won an Xbox, expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “This helps a lot for parents like me who need extra help.”
The event was supported by various local municipalities and organizations, including a generous donation of more than 10 televisions from state Rep. Debbie Meyers-Martin’s office. “This is a valuable asset to the communities,” she remarked, highlighting the importance of providing Christmas presents to families in need.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle praised the longevity of the toy drive, noting, “This has been going on for 29 years, and local leaders have continued it for the last four years.” Her sentiments reflected the shared excitement and community spirit that filled the center.
Matteson Mayor Sheila Chalmers-Currin shared her joy in witnessing the community come together, saying, “It makes me feel like being a kid at Christmas again.” She reminisced about her childhood gifts and emphasized the importance of creating joyful moments for children today.
Rich Township Supervisor Calvin Jordan acknowledged the economic challenges families face, stating, “This toy drive is more important than ever.” He reiterated the commitment to support not only Matteson but also neighboring municipalities, ensuring that all local children benefit from this festive initiative.
