Salesian Missions Delivers Laptops and Soccer Balls to Nigerian Youth

Students at various Salesian centers in Nigeria have received vital support through donations made possible by collaborations developed by Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco. Recently, these centers benefited from the generous delivery of laptops and sports equipment, enhancing both educational and recreational opportunities for young people in need.

The donations included laptops aimed at assisting students with their academic work, particularly at the Salesian Technical and Vocational Training Center in Ondo, the Vocational Training Center in Koko, and among students in formation in Ibadan and Akure. Additionally, soccer balls contributed by the men’s soccer team from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, were distributed across various Salesian youth centers, including those in Osogbo, Ibadan, Lagos, Koko, and Onitsha.

A Salesian representative expressed gratitude in a letter to donors: “On behalf of our youth ministry and communities, I write with great honor to express our heartfelt joy, appreciation, and thanksgiving for the generous gifts of laptops and balls we received. Your thoughtful donations have brought immense joy to our young people and to our centers.” The letter further emphasized the significant impact of these contributions, stating, “Your support strengthens our mission and inspires hope among the youth we serve.”

These donations come at a critical time for Nigeria, a country facing considerable challenges. According to UNICEF, Nigeria is not only the most populous nation in Africa but also ranks as the ninth most populous country globally. The United Nations projects that Nigeria will be among the countries contributing significantly to the world’s population increase by 2050. Despite having the second-largest economy in Africa, Nigeria grapples with extreme poverty, with approximately 100 million people living on less than $1 a day.

Around 64% of households in Nigeria identify as poor, and 32% report that their financial situations have deteriorated over the past year. Such statistics starkly illustrate the ongoing struggles faced by many Nigerians, highlighting the importance of support initiatives like those from Salesian Missions.

Founded in New Rochelle, New York, Salesian Missions operates as part of the Don Bosco Network, a global federation of Salesian non-governmental organizations. The mission of this U.S.-based nonprofit Catholic organization is to raise funds for international programs that serve youth and families in impoverished communities worldwide. Comprising priests, brothers, sisters, and laypeople, Salesian missionaries are dedicated to assisting underprivileged children in over 130 countries and helping young people acquire trades that lead to employment opportunities. To date, more than 3 million youth have benefited from services funded by Salesian Missions, which operates without regard to race or religion.
