Assemblyman Smullen Announces $44M for Library Upgrades

Assemblyman Robert Smullen, representing Assembly District 118, has announced the recipients of five library construction grants aimed at modernizing public libraries in the region. This funding initiative, part of a broader effort by the New York State Education Department and the New York State Library, is supported by a total of $44 million allocated in the FY 2024-25 State Budget for library construction projects statewide.

In total, 212 projects have received approval across New York, reflecting the state’s commitment to enhancing public library facilities. Smullen emphasized the importance of these grants, stating, “It is inspiring to see these grant monies awarded to libraries throughout the 118th Assembly District to help bring these historic centers for reading and learning into the 21st century.”

The specific grant awards in Assembly District 118 are as follows:

– The Prospect Free Library in Oneida County will receive $12,750 to replace nine windows and install vinyl siding on the building’s exterior.

– The Frankfort Free Library in Herkimer County has been awarded $82,912 to remove existing main-level windows and install new energy-efficient models.

– The Old Forge Library, also in Herkimer County, will receive $144,559 to install a hydronic geothermal heating and cooling vertical loop field beneath its parking lot.

– The Gloversville Public Library in Fulton County is set to receive $104,626 for the installation of internal and external security cameras.

– The Johnstown Public Library, also in Fulton County, has been awarded $251,804 to construct an exterior hardscape, rebuild its historic entrance, and create a multipurpose outdoor space.

Smullen highlighted the essential role that libraries play within communities, providing access to knowledge and diverse literary genres for individuals of all ages. He expressed anticipation for the completion of these renovation projects, stating, “I am excited to see these renovation projects completed, modernizing our libraries so they stand tall for years to come.”
