Community Mourns Ralph Sterling Herron, Dedicated Scouter and Leader

Ralph Sterling Herron, a beloved figure in the Fairmont community, passed away on December 25, 2025, at the age of 72 after an eight-year battle with cancer. Herron was known for his unwavering dedication to family, community service, and the Boy Scouts of America, where he made a lasting impact over nearly six decades.

Born on October 6, 1953, in Painesville, Ohio, Ralph Herron spent much of his life in Fairmont, West Virginia. He married Kathy Thomas in 1979, and together they raised three sons: Steve, Todd, and Victor. Herron worked primarily for North American Phillips (Westinghouse), where he was respected for his contributions.

His commitment to Scouting was profound. Over the years, he held various leadership roles within the organization, including positions with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Herron was actively involved with the Mountaineer Area Council, contributing to the leadership of Camp Mountaineer and leading Philmont contingents. His passion for Scouting and community service culminated in his role as Conference Scouting Coordinator for the Circuit Rider Camporees from 2006 to 2023.

Ralph Herron was recognized for his dedication to Scouting, receiving multiple awards such as the District Award of Merit, Whitney M. Young Award, Torch Award, and the prestigious Silver Beaver. Additionally, he was honored with the Vigil Honor from the Menawngihella Order of the Arrow Lodge #550. His loyalty extended beyond Scouting; he was also a devoted member of Highlawns United Methodist Church and actively participated in the Salvation Army.

In his personal life, Herron enjoyed traveling with his family in their RV, creating cherished memories across the country. His legacy is carried on by his wife, Kathy Herron, who served as his caregiver, his brother Roger Herron and sister-in-law Denise Herron, and his sons Steve (Dawn) Herron and their children Archer and Coen, and Victor (Bethany) Herron. He is also survived by his father-in-law, the Reverend Donald Thomas, and numerous cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Todd Herron, his parents Troy and Flo Herron, and his mother-in-law Montana Thomas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Mountaineer Area Council at 192 McColloch Drive, Wheeling, WV 26003, Highlawns United Methodist Church at P.O. Box 485, Rivesville, WV 26588, or a charity of one’s choice.

The family has entrusted the arrangements to the Ford Funeral Home, located at 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont. Friends are invited to pay their respects on December 29 from 1 to 8 p.m., and again on December 30 from 12 Noon until the start of the funeral service at 2 p.m., officiated by the Reverend David Stilgenbauer.
