Beloved Community Leader John Paul Kirk Passes Away at 94

John Paul Kirk, Sr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on December 9, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. His wife of 73 years, Alice Kirk, along with their children and grandchildren, were by his side as he departed this life after a long and fulfilling journey.

A Life of Service and Adventure

Born on March 14, 1931, in Ashland, Alabama, John was the youngest child of Daniel P. and Clara I. Kirk. He grew up in a large family with ten siblings and maintained strong ties to his roots throughout his life. John graduated from Clay County High School in 1949, and his unexpected enlistment in the Army Air Corps marked the beginning of a remarkable journey.

While stationed at Amarillo Air Force Base, John taught aircraft electronics, where he met Alice. They married on December 27, 1952, and together they raised three children: John Jr., Kathy, and Rebecca. Their family grew to include ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with another on the way in January 2026.

After his military service, John and Alice explored opportunities abroad, living in Bogotá, Colombia, where they formed lasting friendships. Upon returning to the United States, they settled in Torrance, California. There, John embarked on a successful career in financial planning, eventually establishing his own firm after more than 50 years in the industry.

Community Engagement and Legacy

John’s commitment to community service was extensive. He held leadership roles in several organizations, including the South Bay Sunrise Rotary Club, where he served as president. He was also a member of Toastmasters International and played a significant role as a board member and chairperson for The Arc South Bay. His influence extended to the Torrance YMCA, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Managers, and he was a dedicated member of the South Bay Association of Chambers of Commerce.

John and Alice became active members of the First United Methodist Church of Redondo Beach in 1961. John was instrumental in establishing the church’s endowment fund, demonstrating his foresight and dedication to ensuring the church’s long-term sustainability.

John Kirk leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and adventure. He is survived by his wife, Alice, their three children, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on January 10, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church, located at 243 S. Broadway, Redondo Beach, CA 90277.
