Beloved Matriarch Ann Marie Hanson Passes Away at 97

Ann Marie Hanson, a cherished matriarch and devoted family member, passed away peacefully at her home on December 20, 2025, at the age of 97. Surrounded by her loving family, she fulfilled her wish to spend her final moments in the comfort of her own home.

Born as Ann Marie Loge on August 13, 1928, in Blue Earth, Minnesota, she was the daughter of Hans and Mildred Loge. On September 17, 1950, she married Lyle Kenneth Hanson, with whom she shared a deep bond for 68 years. Together, they nurtured three children: Peggy Ann Schulman (David), Sue Marie Tharaldson (Roger), and Brian Lyle Hanson (Shari). Ann instilled family values in her children, emphasizing the importance of daily prayers before meals and bedtime.

Throughout her life, Ann was a dedicated wife and mother, known for her kindness and nurturing spirit. Her legacy extends to her grandchildren, including Jill Boyanovsky (Chris), Jen Lee (Damon), Joslynn Malam (Scott), Thor Wayne Hanson, and Noah Kenneth Hanson (fiancée Meghan Erickson), as well as her great-grandchildren, Jace Harris and Kayla Tharaldson. She also had a fondness for her three grand-dogs, Duke, Winston, and Jax.

Ann was recognized for her culinary talents, excelling as both a cook and baker. From an early age, she demonstrated a strong work ethic, beginning her career at the age of 11 as a nanny. At the age of 50, she persuaded Lyle to purchase a restaurant, aptly named The Kaffe Hus, located on Broadway in Albert Lea, which became a local success. Her professional journey also included positions at National T Grocery, First Lutheran Church, and Standard Café.

Active in her community, Ann was an avid bridge player and enjoyed games with family and friends. She was known for her exceptional baking skills, often preparing traditional holiday treats such as Krumkake. Although she was unable to make Lefsa this year, her passion for cooking remained evident in her dedication to family traditions. Ann was a long-standing member of First Lutheran Church, where she contributed for over 80 years.

Ann was preceded in death by her beloved husband Lyle, her parents Hans and Mildred Loge, and her siblings: sister Betty and brothers Mike, Marion, Andy, and Bill. She is survived by two brothers, Gene and Terry Loge. Notably, her family has a legacy of military service, with several members, including her father and husband, having served in the United States armed forces.

Described as a strong-willed and vivacious woman, Ann enjoyed dressing up for social occasions, whether it be visiting friends, dancing, or attending church. She cherished the simple pleasure of driving with family, exploring the world around her.

A visitation and celebration of Ann’s life will be held on December 30, 2025, from 12:00 to 14:00 at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at East Freeborn Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made to a favorite charity in Ann’s honor, ensuring her spirit of generosity continues to inspire others.
