Kim Jong Un Celebrates New Year with Daughter, Highlights Achievements

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un participated in the New Year celebrations in Pyongyang, which featured fireworks, patriotic performances, and a taekwondo demonstration, as reported by state media KCNA. Accompanying him was his daughter Ju Ae, who has been identified by analysts as a potential successor to Kim. Photographs released by KCNA depicted Ju Ae engaging warmly with children and sitting closely alongside her father.

In his address, Kim praised the North Korean populace for their contributions, describing 2025 as a year of “successes and phenomenal changes.” He emphasized the importance of unity among the people as the country prepares for a pivotal gathering of the Workers’ Party of Korea, scheduled to occur in early 2026. This congress is expected to outline the nation’s strategic goals for the next five years, focusing on areas including nuclear and weapons development, as well as economic initiatives.

Kim’s Message to Troops and International Relations

During the celebrations, Kim also conveyed a New Year’s message to North Korean troops engaged in the conflict in Ukraine, who are reportedly fighting alongside Russian forces. He referred to them as the “greatest strength and pride” of the country, reinforcing their role as a “strong pillar” of national defense. Kim expressed hope for their safe return, assuring them that they have the support of both Pyongyang and Moscow. “Be brave. Behind you are Pyongyang and Moscow,” Kim stated, as noted by KCNA.

Additionally, KCNA reported that Kim received New Year greetings from various heads of state, including the president of China, although specific details and names, such as Xi Jinping, were not disclosed.

As North Korea navigates its complex political landscape, the upcoming congress will be vital in shaping its future direction. The emphasis on military strength and unity suggests a continued commitment to its current policies, even as the regime faces external pressures and internal challenges.
