UPDATE: North Shore community members kicked off 2026 with a heartwarming tradition, participating in polar plunges in both Nahant and Swampscott on January 1. The events raised significant funds for My Brother’s Table and the Don Hause Legacy Fund, highlighting the community’s spirit and resilience.
More than 100 participants lined up along Fisherman’s Beach in Swampscott at 11 a.m., braving frigid temperatures as they prepared to plunge into the icy waters. A countdown culminated in a loud boom from a miniature cannon, signaling the start of the plunge. Local resident Kevin Rogers expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Every year the event is always for a great cause, and this one especially so.”
In Nahant, at noon, the annual event dubbed “Freezin’ for a Reason” attracted a large crowd outside the Life Saving Station. Co-founder Mario Capano emphasized the importance of supporting local charities, stating, “With all the food instability that’s going on, we picked My Brother’s Table because it’s a great organization in the City of Lynn.”
The polar plunge in Swampscott also honored the late Donald M. Hause, a beloved community member who passed away after a long battle with cancer in September 2024. His wife, Kimberly Hause, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community. “My husband was a big part of the community. He was on the Zoning Board for many years, he was on the Select Board, and he coached lacrosse,” she said.
Yacht Club Commodore Mary Webster shared her sentiments, stating, “Don was a really special member of the Town. It means a lot to me because in the past when I thought about running, he supported me wholeheartedly.” The community’s tribute to Hause reflects the lasting legacy he left behind.
Event organizer Mike Hartmann noted the growth of the event over the past 20 years. “It’s great to see the proceeds go to the Don Hause Legacy Fund,” he said, emphasizing how the event has become a staple of the New Year celebrations.
Participants felt invigorated by their chilly plunge. Rob Begin, who has participated for the past 18 years, remarked, “You always have to kick off the new year with a little chill. It wasn’t too bad today.”
As temperatures hovered around freezing, co-founder George Sonia highlighted the multifaceted support offered by My Brother’s Table, not limited to food but also medical assistance. “They have a clinic, doctors, and nurses who come to help people,” he explained, showcasing the organization’s broad impact in the community.
Lynn Mayor Jared C. Nicholson participated with his family, lauding the event as a “great tradition” that supports a worthy cause. Rep. Sean Reid echoed his sentiments, stating, “My Brother’s Table does so much great work for so many, especially during these challenging times.”
The polar plunge tradition not only marks the beginning of the New Year but also strengthens community bonds. As participants gathered at Short Beach to take on the plunge, they simultaneously contributed to crucial local charities.
This year’s events not only celebrated the spirit of giving but also honored the memory of a cherished community member. As the North Shore community continues to unite for such impactful causes, the legacy of Donald M. Hause and the mission of My Brother’s Table remain at the forefront of community efforts.
