James “Jim” Gregory Danielson, a cherished educator and community figure, passed away at the age of 77 on December 1, 2025, at his home in Vacaville. He was surrounded by his wife, Dianne, and daughter, Kailyn, during his final moments after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Born on May 15, 1948, to Jean (née Mangles) and Edgar Danielson, Jim was a descendant of early settlers in Suisun Valley. His childhood was spent in Vallejo and Fairfield, before the family returned to the Mangels’ ranch where Jim developed a love for the outdoors. From a young age, he engaged in various activities, including biking with friends and exploring orchards.
Jim pursued his education at Chico State, earning a teaching credential before returning to the Solano area to start his career. He became known as “Mr. D.” to students and staff, ultimately establishing himself as a beloved elementary school teacher at both Elmira and Callison Elementary Schools. His engaging teaching style included creative activities such as “silent ball” and “the map game.” He also created captivating projects for open house events, including an entire Oregon Trail scene.
In addition to his teaching, Jim was known for his warm personality and thoughtful gestures. Every Friday, he brought donuts and coffee for the office staff and enjoyed light-hearted pranks with fellow teachers, fostering a lively atmosphere at school. His handwritten worksheets showcased his impeccable penmanship, and his dedication to his students was evident in his efforts to help them succeed.
Jim met his beloved wife, Dianne (née Cretcher), in a meaningful encounter, and they celebrated 38 years of marriage. Their bond as educators deepened when they co-taught together for three years after Dianne’s retirement. Their shared love for nature led them on numerous vacations to explore redwoods, beaches, and vineyards in the Napa and Suisun valleys. Jim ensured he never missed an opportunity to express his love, stocking his sock drawer with jewelry for occasions and regularly gifting Dianne with flowers.
As a father, Jim was deeply devoted to Kailyn, spending countless hours teaching her the nuances of coloring and attending her dance recitals. He maintained a close connection with her even after she moved out, sending handwritten letters to keep their bond strong. Jim’s gentle nature and his ability to make others laugh will be remembered fondly by those who knew him.
He is predeceased by his parents, sister Lauri Bailey, and sister-in-law Gloria Pickering. Jim is survived by his wife, Dianne, daughter Kailyn Danielson (Ryan), son Greg Heinze (Steven), sister Kathy Sbaffi (Dave), brother-in-law Bill Cretcher (Tilly), and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on January 8, 2026, at 13:00 at Village 360 in Suisun Valley. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jim’s life. Interested attendees can RSVP by texting (707) 689-7134.
Jim Danielson’s legacy as an educator, husband, father, and friend will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
