UPDATE: A devastating fire in downtown Arcata on October 20, 2023, has caused an estimated $18 million in damages, incinerating homes, businesses, and art studios. Authorities confirm that the fire, described as a “once in a career type of fire” by Arcata Fire Chief Chris Emmons, completely destroyed four buildings, impacting seven businesses and numerous apartments.
The fire erupted around 2:30 p.m. and was fueled by a damaged gas valve and strong winds that spread flames rapidly. Firefighters worked tirelessly, battling the blaze until 10 a.m. the next day. Over 80 firefighters from various Humboldt County departments were involved, and thankfully, there were no reported injuries or fatalities.
The Red Cross is actively assisting residents who lost their homes and belongings in this catastrophic fire. Crowdfunding efforts have already raised over $100,000 to support survivors, with a notable campaign for Northtown Books, a local bookstore that operated for 60 years before being destroyed. As of Monday, it has raised $97,963 towards its $100,000 goal.
In an emotional statement, Northtown Books expressed gratitude for the community’s support, stating, “Without the incredible support of our community, we never would have been able to do what we love all these years.” The business has lost all inventory, records, and historical materials but is hopeful about rebuilding in the future.
The fire also devastated the studios of four local artists, who described the loss of decades of work and irreplaceable items as a tragedy. One artist, Van Shields, lamented the destruction of his wife’s 50 years of journals, emphasizing the emotional toll of the disaster, “It’s just gone… But we’re alive and we’re upright, and we are going to go forward.”
Nearby businesses, including Hensel’s Ace Hardware, have also been affected, with parts of the store destroyed. Fortunately, Hensel’s Ace has already reopened, with plans to rebuild and relocate some of their operations. Manager Dustin Jackson stated, “We’re just fortunate that everybody’s okay, and yeah, we’re rebuilding and moving forward.”
Local officials, including State Senator Mike McGuire, are coordinating with state agencies to expedite recovery efforts. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has declared a state of emergency due to hazardous materials from the fire, prompting a special session of the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors to ratify this declaration.
As the investigation into the fire’s cause continues, Emmons noted that while natural gas is not ruled out as a potential cause, it likely contributed to the fire’s intensity. Investigators are expected to review videos and witness statements, a process that may take weeks.
For those displaced by this tragic event, assistance is available through the American Red Cross at 707-496-8278.
The community of Arcata is rallying together in support of those affected, demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity. As recovery efforts unfold, residents are encouraged to contribute to the crowdfunding initiatives and support local businesses as they begin to rebuild.
