A chance encounter at Johnny’s Bagels in south Bethlehem led to an unexpected international friendship. Fred P. Rooney, an attorney and advocate for access to justice, assisted a Lehigh University student named Steven whose car had broken down while visiting with his mother, Lancy, from China. This act of kindness not only provided immediate help but also established connections that would ultimately span continents.
During a meeting in early 2024, Rooney was approached by Nelson, an employee at the cafe, who introduced him to Steven. The student explained that his vehicle, parked on Montclair Street, wouldn’t start. After confirming the car’s issues, Rooney offered to use his AAA membership to call for a mechanic. The tow truck arrived within 30 minutes, revealing a dead battery. Rooney paid for a new battery, leaving both Steven and Lancy relieved and grateful.
Building Bonds Through Generosity
As they walked back down the hill, a brief conversation revealed that Steven lived nearby. Lancy expressed her desire to invite Rooney to visit their family in China, where they own hotels. Rooney graciously accepted the invitation, sharing his dream of visiting the country. This initial act of kindness sparked a series of events that would intertwine their lives in unexpected ways.
In the summer of 2025, Lancy returned to Bethlehem to spend more time with her son. With Steven attending summer classes, she volunteered at the Church of the Nativity Thrift Shop, eager to contribute her time and skills. Rooney found joy in their interactions, appreciating Lancy’s dedication to helping others.
Amid this backdrop, Steven sought Rooney’s assistance in finding a summer internship. Recognizing his potential, Rooney recalled Jose Nicolas Conil, a successful entrepreneur from the Dominican Republic. After contacting Nicolas, who operates out of VentureX in Bethlehem, the two connected. Nicolas welcomed Steven for an internship opportunity, further solidifying the ties that had formed.
A Dream Realized: A Journey to China
The synergy between Steven’s aspirations and Nicolas’s business interests led to unforeseen outcomes. Nicolas, who had previously traveled to China, was keen on expanding his connections there. This intersection of lives culminated in a heartfelt gratitude that Rooney felt towards Lancy and her husband, Wang Wei. Their invitation to visit China became a reality.
On January 6, 2026, Rooney, along with Nicolas and his partner Karina, arrived in Beijing. They were welcomed warmly by Steven, Lancy, and Wang Wei, marking a significant milestone in their relationship. The journey that began with a simple dead battery had blossomed into a rich cultural exchange and friendship.
Reflecting on this experience, Rooney noted the profound impact of kindness and the unexpected paths it can create. From a local bagel shop to the bustling streets of Beijing, the blessings of serendipity have enriched their lives in ways they could never have anticipated. This story serves as a reminder of the power of human connection and the opportunities that arise from acts of generosity.
