Bishop Brossart secured a crucial victory against Scott High School, winning 83-74 in Taylor Mill, which positions them one win away from clinching the top seed in the 37th District tournament. The game showcased the Mustangs’ determination, highlighted by two dramatic half-court buzzer beaters, one from Drew Steffen at the end of the first quarter and another from Brady Boruske to conclude the second quarter.
With this win, Brossart improved its record to 9-9, following a previous upset over Campbell County on January 3. The Mustangs are now 2-0 in the district and will face Calvary Christian on February 3 to finalize the seeding.
Ben Franzen, head coach of the Mustangs, acknowledged the team’s focus on their goals. “Our first goal is to make it to the All “A” state, something that we weren’t able to achieve. But because of the Campbell win, even after losing in the All “A,” we still have this goal in front of us that’s attainable,” he stated.
The victory was marked by a balanced scoring effort, with all five starters contributing in double figures. Leading the team was Carson Hesse, who scored 23 points, including 13 in the first half. Steffen added 15 points, while Nick Cozzi tallied 14 points, Boruske finished with 13, and Beckett Kuntz contributed 12.
Hesse emphasized his aggressive playing style in high-stakes moments. “Getting downhill, ripping low and using my height and speed to my advantage,” he explained. “It’s a big game, so it definitely boosts my physicality.”
The game began with Scott taking an early lead of 18-16 despite Brossart’s buzzer beater. However, the Mustangs surged ahead, leading 36-30 at halftime and extending their advantage to 56-50 by the end of the third quarter.
Scott’s head coach, Steve Frommeyer, noted the need for his team to execute better defensively. “We needed to get stops, and we weren’t. We worked three days on prepping, but at the end of the day, you’ve got to be able to execute,” he said.
Scott, now holding a record of 11-8, saw their chances slip as they allowed 27 points in the final quarter. The Eagles were led by Ty Cook, who scored 17 points before sustaining an injury in the second half. Other contributions included Ben Brown with 15 points, Jayden Dodd with 13, and Jordan Clemons with 11.
Scott will next face Holmes on Saturday at 17:00, while Bishop Brossart prepares for their important matchup against Calvary Christian.
In summary, Brossart’s performance not only brought them closer to their season goal but also set the stage for an exciting conclusion to the district tournament.
