German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul commences a significant five-day diplomatic mission to Southeast Asia and the Pacific, aiming to strengthen alliances with nations such as Australia and New Zealand. This trip is part of Germany’s strategy to counterbalance the influence of the United States and China, as geopolitical dynamics increasingly shift towards power politics.
The journey begins with a visit to Singapore on October 23, 2023, followed by meetings in New Zealand, Tonga, Australia, and Brunei. Wadephul emphasized the importance of expanding Germany’s global network of partnerships to align with core interests. He stated, “At a time when power politics threaten to replace the strength of the law, we must expand our global network of robust partnerships.”
The minister highlighted the shared commitment to a stable international order among the five countries. He pointed out that developments in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea have far-reaching global consequences. Although he refrained from directly naming China, its aggressive policies in the region, particularly regarding Taiwan, remain a significant concern.
Wadephul also aims to enhance relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Pacific Island Forum, an organization established in 1971. Currently, Brunei holds the role of coordinating relations between ASEAN and the European Union. This collaboration is crucial in addressing matters of mutual interest and fostering regional stability.
In addition to strengthening bilateral ties, Wadephul is seeking support for Germany’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in 2024. He articulated the Indo-Pacific region’s significance as a source of strategically important raw materials, noting Germany’s intention to diversify its supply chains and mitigate dependency in critical areas.
The minister also stressed the region’s pivotal role in securing sea lanes and facilitating global supply chains, which are vital for economic development. As Germany navigates this complex geopolitical landscape, Wadephul’s trip underscores a proactive approach to enhancing international partnerships in an increasingly competitive environment.
