Deni Avdija Becomes First Israeli NBA All-Star; Trail Blazers Forward Honored

UPDATE: Deni Avdija has made history as the first Israeli player to earn an NBA All-Star selection, announced just moments ago. The Portland Trail Blazers forward secured his spot as a Western Conference reserve for the All-Star showcase scheduled for February 15 in Inglewood, California.

This remarkable achievement comes during Avdija’s breakout season, where he is posting career-high averages of 25.5 points, 6.7 assists, and 7.2 rebounds across 44 games. Avdija’s performance has propelled him into elite company, making him one of only three players in the league to average at least 25 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, alongside superstars Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic.

Avdija, known affectionately as “Turbo,” has been a beacon of hope for the struggling Blazers, who were at 23-26 and ranked ninth in the Western Conference heading into their game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. His contributions are even more significant given the team’s recent injury woes.

“Proud of him. I know he cares about this team,”

said Blazers coach Tiago Splitter. “When you see a person like that succeeding, it’s truly special.”

The 6-foot-8 forward has shown exceptional versatility this season, recording three triple-doubles and reaching double figures in assists nine times. He has also scored 20 or more points in 35 games, showcasing his offensive prowess.

Despite being sidelined by a sore back for six of the last ten games, Avdija’s impact remains undeniable. He becomes the 17th player in Blazers history to earn an All-Star nod, the first since Damian Lillard in 2023.

This year’s All-Star showcase will feature a new tournament format, pitting U.S. players against their international counterparts. Avdija is set to join a star-studded World team lineup that includes Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Victor Wembanyama.

As Avdija prepares for this prestigious event, his selection not only highlights his personal achievements but also serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes everywhere, particularly in Israel. Basketball fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming All-Star festivities as Avdija continues to rise as a key figure in the league.
