Annapolis Mayor Dismisses Police Chief, Appoints Acting Leader

Annapolis Mayor Jared Littmann has dismissed Police Chief Ed Jackson from his position, citing “differing approaches in management” as the primary reason for the abrupt change. This decision, which took effect immediately, follows Littmann’s request for Jackson to resign last week—a request that Jackson declined.

Jackson has led the Annapolis Police Department since August 2019. During his tenure, he received commendations from the Mayor for his initiatives aimed at diversifying the police force and his dedication to reentry programs and cold case investigations. In his official statement, Littmann expressed gratitude for Jackson’s service, saying, “I admire and respect his work on diversifying the force and command staff and his work on reentry and cold case investigations. These efforts are important to our community, and I want to see these initiatives continue,” as reported by WBALTV.

In the absence of a permanent chief, Amy Miguez has been appointed as the acting chief. Miguez has over 25 years of experience within the department, having served in various capacities such as patrol, investigations, community outreach, and public information. Reflecting on her career progression, Miguez credited Jackson’s leadership for creating an environment that fosters equity and opportunity. “Chief Jackson’s leadership opened doors at the Annapolis Police Department and strengthened a culture that values equity and opportunity,” she stated, as detailed by FOX Baltimore. “I am deeply grateful for his mentorship and for the foundation he built, and I am honored to continue my service to our residents.”

Littmann has expressed confidence in Miguez’s ability to lead the department through this transition. He emphasized that public safety remains a top priority for the administration. “I have full confidence in Acting Chief Miguez,” Littmann remarked, underlining his belief that the Annapolis Police Department will maintain its commitment to community-focused service.

The search for a permanent police chief will be temporarily paused as the Mayor directs city officials to prioritize other urgent hiring needs. This decision aims to ensure that the police department continues to function effectively during this period of leadership change.
