URGENT UPDATE: The highly anticipated Kermit Henning Memorial Sportsman’s Auction is set to take place today, February 15, from 1 PM to 3 PM at the Great American Outdoor Show (GAOS) in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This annual event, hosted by the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association (POWA), marks its 42nd year of raising funds to support youth educational programs in the outdoors.
The auction will be held in the Erie Room, located above the Small Arena, during the special “Bounce-Back Day,” where admission is free for attendees with ticket stubs from previous days. This is a prime opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts and supporters to acquire unique items while contributing to a worthy cause.
Funds raised from the auction directly benefit the Kermit Henning Youth Education Grant program, which honors the legacy of Kermit Henning, a past president and life member of POWA. To date, POWA has raised over $471,000, funding educational opportunities for youth across the state. Last year alone, 14 organizations received a total of $9,100 to support various outdoor educational activities, including conservation camps and fishing derbies.
Auction coordinator Dennis Scharadin confirmed that even before the event started, several longtime supporters had already committed to donating items. Notable contributions include:
– A guided fishing trip for two on the Susquehanna River, donated by Rod Bates of Koinonia Guide Service.
– An overnight fishing trip on the Juniata River for smallmouth bass and channel catfish, graciously offered by River Rock Guide Service.
– A two-hunter pheasant hunt for eight birds, complete with cleaning services and a guide, donated by Mike Martz of Martz’s Gap View Preserve.
Past auctions have featured a diverse array of items, including firearms, fishing gear, and artwork, all donated by exhibitors at the show. Bidders can expect incredible merchandise while knowing their contributions help nurture the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts.
Today’s event is not only an opportunity to support youth education but also a chance to score fantastic bargains, as vendors are eager to sell their remaining stock rather than pack it up. The excitement of the auction promises a lively atmosphere, with attendees eager to make impactful purchases.
For more information, visit POWA’s booth, No. 4618, located in the Hunting Outfitter Hall. Auctioneer Jeffrey Dunkleberger from JDS Auction Company LLC will also be listing items via online auction, making participation accessible for those unable to attend in person.
