UCSB Appoints Michael Henchy as New Women’s Volleyball Coach

BREAKING: UC Santa Barbara has officially announced Michael Henchy as the new Head Coach of the Women’s Volleyball team, a major development confirmed by Athletics Director Kelly Barsky just moments ago. Henchy, who joins the Gauchos following a triumphant stint at Penn State University, where he helped lead the Nittany Lions to the 2024 National Championship, expressed his excitement about this pivotal role.

“I am thrilled and honored to become the next head coach for UCSB women’s volleyball,” Henchy stated. His deep ties to the community, having grown up in Ventura, California, further amplify the significance of this appointment.

Henchy’s tenure at Penn State was nothing short of remarkable, contributing to a stunning 35-2 season. Under his guidance, the team not only captured the national title but also featured standout players, including the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and multiple All-Big Ten first team selections.

This announcement comes at a critical time as UCSB looks to build on its volleyball legacy, previously shaped by renowned coaches Kathy Gregory and Nicole Lantagne Welch. Henchy aims to uphold this tradition while forging a new path toward championship-level volleyball.

During his coaching career, Henchy has consistently demonstrated his ability to elevate teams. At James Madison University, he played a key role in leading the Dukes to the Sun Belt Conference championship and advancing to the national tournament in both 2022 and 2023. His coaching accolades also include serving as an assistant coach at American University, where he helped the Eagles clinch the 2019 Patriot League championship.

Henchy’s impressive background also includes a successful playing career at Ohio State University, where he was a two-time captain and recorded over 1,001 career kills. His commitment to excellence has been recognized with numerous awards, including being named the AVCA Men’s Div. III National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2019.

In his introductory remarks, Barsky emphasized the importance of Henchy’s community connection and vision. “With his strong Santa Barbara community connection and exceptional coaching experiences, I’m beyond excited to welcome Mike as the next leader of our women’s volleyball program,” she said.

As Henchy prepares to take the helm, expectations are high. The Gauchos community eagerly anticipates his plans for the upcoming season and the potential for a revitalized program that honors its storied past while striving for future success.

This announcement is generating significant buzz as fans and alumni rally around the new coach. Stay tuned for updates on Henchy’s first steps as UCSB’s Women’s Volleyball Head Coach, as the program looks to reclaim its competitive edge in collegiate volleyball.
