Illinois Secures Strong Win Against Indiana, Celebrates Past and Future

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois secured a decisive victory against Indiana on February 11, 2024, winning 71-51 at State Farm Center. The win was particularly significant for head coach Brad Underwood, who emphasized its importance following two consecutive overtime losses. Underwood noted that the victory was not just for the current team but also a tribute to former players and future recruits.

“This win is about the relationships we build here,” Underwood said. “Having former players back in the locker room alongside our recruits and current players really highlights what this program is all about.”

The game served as a major recruiting event, attracting several notable prospects, including Ethan Brown, a three-star guard from Rolla, Missouri. Brown, who signed with Illinois in November, attended with fellow Class of 2027 commitments Quinton Kitt and Mason Martin. They were joined by Jaxson Davis from Warren Township, further solidifying the Illinois program’s future.

Several former Illinois stars were also present, taking advantage of the NBA All-Star break to return to campus. Among them were Will Riley and Kasperas Jakucinois, who were first-round picks in the 2025 NBA Draft. Current guard Kylan Boswell acknowledged the significance of having such a diverse group together, saying, “It doesn’t matter if you were a star or didn’t play much. This program welcomes everyone back.”

Illinois’ rebounding performance was a critical factor in the victory. The team dominated the boards, outrebounding Indiana 38-25, which marked a return to form after struggles in recent games. Underwood emphasized the importance of this aspect, stating, “A re-emphasis on rebounding over the last two days was crucial.”

The Illini showed strength in offensive rebounding, with Boswell and 7-foot center Tomislav Ivisic each collecting four offensive boards. This led to a significant 15-4 advantage in offensive rebounds and a 17-5 lead in second-chance points. Indiana head coach Darian DeVries acknowledged the challenge, saying, “Illinois is one of the best rebounding teams in the country for a reason. Their size and effort make it difficult to compete.”

On the offensive end, Illinois maintained control, with Boswell leading the charge after returning from injury. He contributed significantly, while Indiana struggled to find its rhythm. The Hoosiers were held to just 51 points, with their top scorer, Lamar Wilkerson, managing only 21 points on 8 of 14 shooting, a stark contrast to his recent performances.

Boswell, who took on the defensive assignment against Wilkerson, said, “I just tried my best to make things difficult for him. He’s a really good player, but we managed to disrupt their flow.” Illinois’ defense was effective in limiting transition opportunities for the Hoosiers, a strategy Underwood highlighted as vital to the win.

The Illini’s ball security also played a crucial role in their success. With only two turnovers in the game, they forced Indiana into nine turnovers, seven of which were steals, including three from freshman guard Keaton Wagler. Wagler scored 18 points, showcasing his ability to attack the basket.

Despite the win, Underwood expressed frustration over the lack of fouls called during the game, particularly regarding Wagler’s aggressive play. “I don’t want him to miss calls just because he plays the game the right way,” Underwood stated, referencing a specific incident where he felt Wagler was unfairly treated by officials.

Looking ahead, the Illini will need to navigate injuries as Andrej Stojakovic remained sidelined with a high ankle sprain. Underwood indicated that the team prioritizes Stojakovic’s long-term health over rushing him back into action.

As the season progresses, the win against Indiana not only bolsters Illinois’ confidence but also reinforces the program’s commitment to building relationships with alumni and nurturing future talent.
