Doug Wilson, a prominent pastor and leader of Christ Church, will engage in a discussion with Joe Heschmeyer, a well-known Catholic scholar. This event, titled “Sola Scriptura — Is the Bible Alone Enough for Salvation?”, is organized by the Vandal Catholic Club and is expected to attract a large audience.
The debate will focus on the doctrine of Sola Scriptura, which emerged during the Protestant Reformation. This belief asserts that the Bible alone is the ultimate authority on Christian faith and the sole source for salvation. In contrast, the Catholic viewpoint emphasizes the necessity of the Church’s authority to interpret the Bible and its teachings. This theological divide has persisted since the 16th century.
Eric Meyer, an organizer for the event and a deacon at St. Augustine’s Catholic Center on the university campus, anticipates an attendance of around 2,000 people at the Idaho Central Credit Union Arena. “Events like this offer a rare opportunity for public, energetic dialogue that strengthens faith and builds understanding,” Meyer stated in a news release. He noted that the debate is intended to foster a “respectful, charitable, and intellectually engaging conversation between Catholics and Protestants, centered on shared faith in Christ.”
Wilson, who has been a controversial figure within the conservative Christian nationalist movement, has made headlines for various statements and actions, including leading a prayer meeting at the Pentagon at the invitation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. His views have sparked criticism, particularly regarding women’s voting rights and controversial claims about the experiences of enslaved individuals in the American South.
In contrast, Heschmeyer, based in Kansas City, Missouri, is recognized as a national Catholic apologist and the host of the “Shameless Popery” podcast. He is also an author and speaker, known for his engaging discussions on Catholic doctrine and scripture.
The evening will commence at 18:00 with an opening address by Dr. Currie Myers, a former police officer and a professor at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas.
