URGENT UPDATE: The highly anticipated McNeese State Banners Series is set to launch on March 1 with an opening reception from 3-5 p.m. at the 1911 Historic City Hall in Lake Charles. This season marks the 34th year of enriching the cultural landscape of Southwest Louisiana, offering a diverse range of artistic experiences.
Attendees can expect an eclectic mix of performances, from 17th-century classical music to vibrant Guatemalan rhythms, along with rock and pop favorites. “The season really is like a buffet,” said Brook Hanemann, director of the Banners Series. “You can enjoy the art forms you already love, but you also get to sample something new without fear.” This year’s series promises to engage both the mind and senses, making it a must-attend event.
The opening celebration will feature live music by Sean Hager, delicious culinary treats including jambalaya and sweets, and an exhibition showcasing the artistic talents of McNeese students. The event is free and open to the public, making it accessible to everyone in the community.
Membership packages start at $80 and go up to $550 for all events, including exclusive access to the fall Rouge et Blanc wine and food event. Individual event tickets are priced at $20 but are free for McNeese and SOWELA Technical Community College students with ID. Free season passes will also be available for educators, first responders, and individuals aged 80 and over.
The Banners Series will feature a total of 16 events running from March 1 to April 30. Highlights include:
- Relic: March 4 at 7 p.m. – A chamber group performing Baroque music with period instruments. Tickets: $20.
- A French Garden of Orchids: March 14-15 – An orchid exhibit and symphony concert showcasing beautiful blooms and music. Free admission for the exhibit; concert tickets: $20.
- Tartan Terrors: March 21 at 7 p.m. – Celtic music infused with high energy and humor. Tickets: $20, free for students.
- United States Air Force Concert Band: March 24 at 7 p.m. – A free concert featuring patriotic and Broadway music.
- Movies Under the Stars: April 10 at 6:30 p.m. – Family movie night with free refreshments on the McNeese lawn.
As stated by Randy Partin, assistant director of the Banners Series, “Music, food, and canvas will be well represented.” This commitment to diverse artistic expression allows attendees to explore a wide array of cultural offerings.
The series will also include discussions and performances that delve into historical topics, such as a panel on April 25 reflecting on 250 years of American governance, and a poetry reading by Kevin Thomason on April 26.
