Gorillaz, the British virtual band, made their debut as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live on March 2, 2024, captivating audiences with a blend of nostalgia and fresh sounds. The performance featured two songs: the iconic “Clint Eastwood” from their self-titled 2001 album and “The Moon Cave” from their latest release, The Mountain.
Opening with “Clint Eastwood,” the band paid homage to a track that Rolling Stone ranked as the 38th best song of the 2000s. The song, inspired by themes from the classic film The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, features verses from Del the Funky Homosapien, who joined the band on stage for this memorable moment.
New Releases and Collaborations
Following their nostalgic opener, Gorillaz performed “The Moon Cave,” showcasing their latest musical evolution. This track features contributions from singer-songwriter Asha Puthli, rapper Black Thought, and sitar player Anoushka Shankar. Notably, the album The Mountain includes collaborations with several artists, some of whom are no longer living, including guitarist and singer Bobby Womack and Dave Jolicoeur of De La Soul.
In an interview with Rolling Stone in February, band co-founder Damon Albarn expressed the album’s thematic depth, stating, “I just thought, if we’re going to talk about the subject of death, I need some people who are dead to help me talk about it.” The album was crafted during a time of personal loss for the band members and was influenced by their travels in India. It incorporates Indian classical instrumentation and features lyrics in multiple languages, including Hindi.
The album consists of fifteen tracks, each marked by unique collaborations, reflecting Gorillaz’s innovative approach to music. Other notable songs from The Mountain include “The Manifesto” and “Damascus.”
Upcoming Tour and Festivals
As Gorillaz prepares to launch their The Mountain tour later this month in the U.K., excitement is building among fans. The band is also scheduled to headline the prestigious Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona in June and the Shaky Knees festival in Atlanta in September.
With their dynamic performance on Saturday Night Live, Gorillaz has once again proven their ability to blend the old with the new, creating a captivating experience that resonates with both longtime fans and newcomers alike. As they embark on this new chapter, the band’s innovative spirit continues to redefine the landscape of modern music.
