Just outside Wichita, Kansas, an innovative facility called Scholwater Villa is fostering connections between seniors and children by combining a traditional nursing home with a daycare center. This unique intergenerational center allows nursing home residents, affectionately known as “Grandfriends,” to interact daily with children from the Heston Child Development Center, which is located within the same building.
Jill Moore, the Life Enrichment Coordinator at Scholwater Villa, emphasized the significance of this arrangement. “It lets us be together without the obstacle of being in different buildings,” she stated. Although the two programs operate independently, Moore facilitates activities that encourage interaction between the two age groups, enhancing their daily experiences.
Benefits of Intergenerational Interaction
Scholwater Villa is noted as one of the few intergenerational centers of its kind in Kansas. According to Katherine Ambrose, an aging expert featured on the talk show Aging Untold, this model provides valuable benefits for both seniors and children. “The intergenerational component is just so beautiful, and we can’t encourage it enough,” Ambrose remarked.
She highlighted that interactions between the residents and children contribute to emotional development for both parties. “You are creating empathy and also curiosity. There are a lot of stories that can be told between generations,” Ambrose explained. The relationships formed in this setting can have lasting impacts, particularly for the children involved.
Ambrose further noted that children who engage with older adult figures often carry these relationships into adulthood. “What I love about children that have access to, say, Grandparent types — they can really leave a legacy in these children that lasts a lifetime,” she added. “You just create, I think, so much more of like life energy. You are just sparking each other.”
