URGENT UPDATE: The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has just announced a crucial upgrade project for curb ramps in Hermiston, aimed at ensuring accessibility compliance with federal standards. This significant work began on March 9, 2023, and is set to continue through July 2023.
Crews are actively enhancing curb ramps along Highway 395, affecting several key intersections, including Theater Lane, Harper Road, Cherry Avenue, Beech Avenue, Catherine Avenue, and more. The upgrades are vital for improving access for individuals with disabilities, ensuring they can navigate the city safely.
As the construction progresses, ODOT advises residents and visitors in Hermiston to be aware of potential disruptions. Sidewalks, land, and shoulders will be closed in the work zones, with flaggers, cones, and signs directing traffic. However, access to local businesses will remain open during the construction period, and pedestrians will still have access through and around the affected areas.
ODOT has emphasized the importance of these improvements, noting that the project is being executed in two phases. Some upgrades were completed in October; however, due to the extensive number of curb ramps requiring attention in Hermiston, the remaining work was divided into this current phase.
With the project underway, ODOT is focused on minimizing inconvenience while maximizing safety and accessibility. Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the progress and to plan their routes accordingly.
