Aqua Pennsylvania Completes $18 Million Acquisition of Greenville Water Authority

Aqua Pennsylvania, a subsidiary of Essential Utilities Inc. (NYSE: WTRG), has successfully completed its acquisition of the Greenville Municipal Water Authority for $18 million. This transaction, finalized earlier this month, expands Aqua’s drinking water service to over 2,900 customers in Mercer County, specifically serving Greenville Borough, Hempfield Township, and West Salem Township.

Regulatory Approval and Future Investments

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission approved the acquisition on January 15, 2026, marking a significant step in Aqua Pennsylvania’s efforts to enhance water services in the region. This acquisition builds on Aqua’s previous purchase of the Greenville Sanitary Authority’s wastewater system last year.

Christopher Franklin, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Essential Utilities, emphasized the company’s commitment to the community, stating, “Our customers in Greenville and the surrounding communities already count on us for safe and reliable wastewater service.” He also highlighted plans for significant investments in the local water infrastructure, with Aqua Pennsylvania anticipating an expenditure of approximately $10 million over the next decade to upgrade the system.

The Greenville water system comprises around 40 miles of water mains. Planned improvements are aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, meeting regulatory standards, addressing environmental concerns, and bolstering cybersecurity measures.

Community Impact and Customer Assurance

Tom Strahler, Chairman of the Greenville Water Authority board, noted that the authority had served the community for more than 100 years. He expressed confidence that the transfer of the water system to Aqua Pennsylvania would ensure long-term stability and provide necessary resources for infrastructure development.

Customers will not see any immediate changes to their base water rates following the acquisition. Any future rate adjustments will require approval from the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. Additionally, customers will gain access to Aqua Pennsylvania’s assistance programs, including the Customer Assistance Program and the Aqua Aid hardship fund, designed to support those in need.

This acquisition marks Aqua Pennsylvania’s seventh purchase of a water or wastewater system in the past 24 months, collectively adding 9,655 customers and 12,420 equivalent dwelling units to the company’s service base. As Aqua Pennsylvania continues to expand its reach, it aims to provide enhanced reliability and service to customers across the region.
