A quilt of support has provided emotional comfort to Rondi Ulmer, a resident of Lake Park, Minnesota, during her battle with breast cancer. The quilt, crafted by her sister-in-law, Kate Ulmer, was filled with messages of encouragement from friends and family. As Rondi underwent chemotherapy treatments last year, these heartfelt notes served as reminders of the love and support surrounding her.
Rondi’s journey began in December 2024 when she discovered a lump in her breast. Following a diagnosis of triple-negative breast cancer on February 17, 2025, she faced an uphill battle, given the advanced Stage 3 classification of her illness. Her treatments commenced on March 3, 2025, coinciding with National Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Awareness Day. This coincidental timing provided an additional layer of significance to her treatment journey.
Support from Family and Friends
The inspiration for the quilt stemmed from Rondi’s past experience. After a close friend succumbed to cancer years prior, Rondi had witnessed the comfort that a similar quilt had provided at the friend’s funeral. During that difficult time, messages of support were shared through emails, as texting was not as common. The quilt displayed these messages, offering solace to many.
When Rondi received her diagnosis, she expressed a desire to have a quilt filled with words of encouragement from her own support network. “I don’t want those messages to go up on a wall after I’m gone,” she said. “I want those messages close.” Kate, a breast cancer survivor herself, began creating the quilt, initially presenting it to Rondi around Easter 2022, even while it was still in progress.
The quilt features a range of messages—from heartfelt notes and prayers to humorous exchanges. One particularly amusing panel captures a text message conversation with Rondi’s siblings. As she prepared to shave her head due to chemotherapy, her family joked about various methods, showcasing their lighthearted approach to the situation. “We are a joking family,” Rondi remarked with a smile.
A Journey of Healing and Growth
Throughout the challenging year, Rondi focused on maintaining a positive outlook. She emphasized the importance of viewing her body as healing rather than fighting cancer, which she described as a negative emotion. Drawing inspiration from a friend who is a five-year breast cancer survivor, Rondi learned to stay present rather than worrying about an uncertain future. “Stay positive,” her friend advised, a mantra Rondi embraced.
Reflecting on the experience, Rondi noted that despite the difficulties, she experienced tremendous personal growth. She achieved the best possible outcome from her treatments, expressing gratitude for her journey. “I was fortunate. I was blessed,” she said, acknowledging that not everyone with a similar diagnosis receives the same positive outcome.
Rondi hopes her story will inspire others facing cancer. She shared her desire to be sensitive to those who may not have the same fortunate conclusion. “I want to be sensitive to the fact that not everybody gets to finish their journey,” she stated, underscoring the importance of support and community in the fight against cancer.
The quilt, now a symbol of resilience and hope, remains a testament to the power of love and encouragement during one of life’s most challenging battles.
