Cold War Veteran and Educator Waburn Dewey Martin Passes Away at 86
Waburn Dewey Martin, a respected Army veteran who played a covert role during the Berlin Wall construction and a lifelong educator, died on April 26, 2026. His passing marks the loss of a dedicated public servant whose life bridged military valor and community commitment.
Born in Streeter, North Dakota, in May 1939, Martin grew up in Bowman, North Dakota, raised by his parents, Christian and Lina Martin. As the second oldest of four siblings, Martin embodied a strong sense of duty early on, joining the United States Army where he trained at the elite Army Language School, specializing in Russian.
During one of the world’s most tense moments, Martin was stationed in Germany amid the construction of the Berlin Wall. There, he engaged in critical covert surveillance, monitoring Russian radio transmissions to gather intelligence at the dawn of the Cold War. His efforts contributed to early U.S. surveillance that shaped the geopolitical landscape for decades.
Devoted Family Man and Educator with Lifelong Impact
In 1963, Martin married his wife, Patricia, beginning a lifetime partnership that lasted until her passing in 2020. Their marriage was marked by deep devotion and notable milestones like a 50th wedding anniversary trip to Hawaii and a spiritual journey to Israel in 2014 — moments highlighting the couple’s enduring faith and shared values.
Education remained at the heart of Martin’s life after his military service. He earned a Master’s degree in Spanish from the University of New Mexico and dedicated decades to teaching. Starting as a high school Spanish teacher, he later became a media specialist for the Mescalero and Tularosa Public Schools, where his support affected thousands of students and educators alike.
Beyond the classroom, Martin was a quiet pillar of his community, volunteering his technical talents for sound and video production at numerous local events, including the Miss Otero County Pageants and the Tularosa Rose Festival. His behind-the-scenes work helped shine a spotlight on others, underlining his modest character and generosity.
Legacy of Faith, Music, and Family
Martin’s deep Christian faith guided him throughout his life; he was known for reading his Bible daily and living with kindness and humility. Music was another lifelong passion — he sang and played the saxophone, enriching his community’s cultural life and personal joy.
He is survived by his daughter, Paula Duntley and her husband Joshua, along with cherished granddaughters Helena and Carys from Galloway, New Jersey. His brother, Sherrill Martin of Montana, also remains. Martin was preceded in death by his wife Patricia, his parents, and two sisters.
Memorial Service and How to Honor His Memory
