UWS Volleyball Sweeps Weekend with Thrilling Comeback Win

Wisconsin-Superior’s women’s volleyball team secured two important victories over the weekend in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, culminating in a dramatic comeback against Minnesota Morris. After losing the first two sets, the Yellowjackets rallied to win the match 3-2, with set scores of 20-25, 13-25, 25-18, 25-14, and 15-10. This victory showcased UWS’s resilience and determination in an intense competition held in Morris.

The Yellowjackets initially faced a formidable challenge as the Cougars dominated the first two sets, committing only three attack errors. However, UWS turned the tide in the third set, winning decisively, and maintained their momentum throughout the fourth set. In the fifth and final set, the Yellowjackets demonstrated exceptional skill by recording eight kills without an attack error, achieving a hitting percentage of .471. Overall, their performance yielded a match hitting percentage of .245, while they outblocked Minnesota Morris 10 to 3.

Leading the charge for UWS was Makenna Hohbein, who tallied 14 kills. Close behind were Kyndra Peterson with 13 kills and Sydney Bader with 12. On the defensive end, Savanna Hering excelled with a match-high 27 digs, while Sydney Smith contributed significantly with six blocks.

Earlier in the weekend, UWS faced Crown in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota. The Yellowjackets stumbled in one set but ultimately triumphed with a 3-1 victory, with set scores of 25-11, 25-14, 18-25, and 25-15. Despite struggling with 11 hitting errors in the third set, the team rebounded to dominate the other sets, accumulating a total of 55 kills compared to Crown’s 24. Hohbein once again led the way with 14 kills, while Hering contributed six aces and a match-high 19 digs.

With a current record of 16-7 and 5-1 in the UMAC, the Yellowjackets are poised to extend their winning streak in a nonconference match against St. Scholastica on Tuesday.

UWS Soccer Teams Face Mixed Results

The UWS women’s soccer team recorded its fifth consecutive shutout in a 0-0 draw against Crown at Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium. Despite dominating the match with 32 shot attempts, 17 of which were on target, the Yellowjackets were unable to score against Crown’s goalkeeper, Rachel Fuller. Goalkeeper Quinn Clark only needed one save to maintain the shutout.

On Sunday, UWS faced St. Catherine, where their scoreless streak of over 484 minutes ended in a 2-0 loss. St. Kate’s took control early, scoring two goals within the first 34 minutes of play. UWS managed 10 shot attempts, with Clark making six saves throughout the match. Their record now stands at 6-5-4 overall and 5-0-3 in the UMAC. The team is scheduled to return to conference action against North Central on Tuesday.

In men’s soccer, UWS secured a 3-1 victory over Crown, with Kyle Massingham scoring two goals just moments apart to break a 1-1 tie. The Yellowjackets dominated the game with a significant advantage of 29 shot attempts, including 14 on target. UWS had earlier faced a setback against Saint John’s, losing 7-2, but quickly rebounded in their match against Crown.

The Yellowjackets’ strong performances across both volleyball and soccer highlight their competitive spirit and determination as they navigate the remainder of their seasons.
