Holy Family Haven Opens 72 Affordable Apartments in Clarkston

A new chapter in affordable housing has begun in Clarkston with the opening of the Holy Family Haven, which features 72 affordable housing units. This initiative, spearheaded by Catholic Charities Housing, was significantly influenced by the students of the Holy Family Catholic School, who contributed ideas and artwork for the project. According to Jonathan Mallahan, Executive Director of Catholic Charities Housing, the complex aims to provide families with a stable and supportive environment.

The grand opening ceremony, held on Wednesday, was marked by the participation of local students, city leaders, and community organizations. Half of the apartments are already occupied, with more families scheduled to move in soon. Mallahan expressed gratitude for the involvement of the Holy Family students, stating, “It was so nice to have all of the Holy Family students there to celebrate the grand opening.”

Community Support and Services

Holy Family Haven, located at 1411 Port Drive, received an official blessing from a priest during the ceremony, attended by representatives from Catholic Charities and the Horizon Housing Alliance. The students showcased their colorful artwork, sang their school song, and engaged in prayer and celebration for the housing project.

During her opening remarks, Mayor Monika Lawrence commended John Pilcher, Executive Director of Horizon Housing Alliance, for delivering a high-quality housing solution. Pilcher emphasized that the complex is designed to be a community rather than a homeless shelter, providing families with a secure place to live. Currently, 30% of the units remain available for families who may qualify for assistance.

According to Mallahan, the Holy Family Haven aims to be more than just a place to reside. “It’s a foundation for families to make lasting changes in their lives and achieve their goals,” he noted. The complex will offer comprehensive support services, assisting families struggling to make ends meet.

Financial Backing and Future Prospects

The project was made possible through a significant investment of $31.4 million from KeyBank Community Development Lending & Investment. Of the 72 units, 70 are designated for families and individuals earning between 30% and 60% of the area median income, while 35 units are specifically reserved for those who have experienced homelessness.

In addition to housing, Catholic Charities plans to offer a robust suite of services, including mental health counseling, substance abuse recovery support, transportation to medical appointments, senior support, and employment assistance. Access to fresh and healthy food distribution will also be part of the initiative.

Applications for the apartments can be submitted through housing.cceasternwa.org/how-to-apply. This new development represents a significant advancement in providing affordable housing solutions in the Clarkston area, with the potential to positively impact many families in need.
