BREAKING: The community mourns the passing of Joseph Angelo Legueri, who peacefully left this world on October 9, 2025, at the age of 81. Known for his infectious humor and love for simple pleasures, Joe’s legacy as a beloved teacher and family man will resonate for years to come.
In a heartfelt tribute, friends and family are invited to celebrate Joe’s life in a unique way, eschewing traditional mourning. Instead, they encourage everyone to “raise a glass, tell a story that may or may not be true, and laugh a little too loudly,” reflecting the vibrant spirit Joe embodied.
Joe’s teaching career began at Duluth Cathedral in 1967, where he inspired countless students until his retirement in 2001. His memorable catchphrase, “The heck you say,” became synonymous with his engaging teaching style. He dedicated his life to education, shaping young minds and leaving a lasting impact on the community.
Born the only son of Dorothy and Angelo Legueri in Nashwauk, Joe was a loving brother to his four sisters, including Patti Williams and Jeannie Sunnarborg. He was married for 58 years to Shirley Legueri, whom he met while driving the after-school activity bus in 1962. Together, they built a home in the woods, creating cherished memories with their two children, Tony and Gina Haggard.
Joe’s passion extended beyond teaching; he was a skilled craftsman who built the family home and had a love for tinkering with cars, especially his prized 1948 Studebaker. He was also a prolific writer, sharing his thoughts and experiences with family and friends.
In his later years, Joe found joy in spending time with his grandchildren, Thomas, Cooper, and Kelsie, teaching them the importance of silliness and unconditional love. His warmth and humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
This is not a time for somber goodbyes; instead, Joe’s family wishes to honor his memory through laughter and storytelling. Friends are encouraged to share their favorite memories of Joe, ensuring that his spirit continues to live on in the hearts of those he touched.
As we remember Joseph Angelo Legueri, let us celebrate a life well-lived, filled with love, laughter, and lasting impact.
