URGENT UPDATE: Construction crews are currently repairing a significant sinkhole near the bustling Clarkston roundabout, with repairs expected to be completed by November 7. A collapsed underground storm line, which occurred in September, led to this disruption in the right lane of a crucial intersection, affecting the flow of traffic near Bridge, Diagonal, and Second streets just west of the Interstate “Blue” Bridge.
Officials confirm that Clarkston Public Works Director Mike Dimmick is overseeing the urgent repairs. He stated, “Every day, it’s looking better,” emphasizing the importance of eliminating future sinkhole issues. The roundabout is a vital route for residents and holiday shoppers heading to local retailers like Costco, Walmart, and Albertsons.
As the situation develops, M.L. Albright and Sons is actively engaged in the repair work under the supervision of Knife River, the primary contractor for the ongoing project. Weather permitting, paving operations will commence next week, further accelerating the timeline for restoring full access to this busy thoroughfare.
The financial responsibilities surrounding the repairs remain unclear as discussions between the Washington State Department of Transportation and the city of Clarkston are ongoing. Dimmick assured the public that a decision should be made soon regarding who will cover the repair costs.
As the right lane is set to fully reopen following the repairs, Dimmick remarked on the necessity of the improvements, stating, “The storm line and manhole are being replaced, and everything within the roundabout will be new. There are no more sinkholes, thank God.”
Officials are grateful for the community’s patience during this critical repair period. The urgency of these repairs cannot be overstated, especially as holiday traffic is anticipated to surge in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation unfolds.
