Morgantown and University High Bands Unite for Mohawk Bowl Halftime Show

MORGANTOWN – The annual Mohawk Bowl football game between Morgantown and University High School will feature a unique halftime show this evening at 19:00 on Baker’s Ridge. In a celebration of community spirit, the marching bands from both schools will collaborate to present a special performance, showcasing their musical talents.

Collaboration and Community Spirit

With over 250 members combined, the bands will perform together, highlighting the unity that can emerge from rivalry. This event marks an opportunity for the schools to come together outside the competitive atmosphere of the football field. Mark Palmer, the band director at University High School since 2000, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, noting that such collaborations have occurred only a few times during his tenure.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to show the other side of the Mohawk rivalry and see how the two schools work together to create our wonderful community in Morgantown,”

Palmer stated.

His counterpart at Morgantown, Lorne Hyskell, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the role that music plays in enhancing the athletic experience. “These are two really great bands from our state coming together to showcase what we have here in Mon County,” Hyskell said. “While we’ve got two great football teams out there on the field playing hard to win the game, we also have two really great bands that are going to join together and try to do the best we can to entertain the crowd a bit.”

Preparing for the Performance

In preparation for the halftime show, the bands held a joint practice on Wednesday at University High School. The performance will feature a medley of songs with a Halloween theme, culminating in a surprise finale. Hyskell revealed that the last song will be Michael Jackson’s iconic “Thriller.”

“We want to go out and do the best we can and sound the best we can while we are out there,” he added, hinting at an exciting visual element for the audience at the end of the performance.

As the two schools prepare to face off on the football field, spectators can look forward to a halftime show that celebrates both competition and collaboration. The Mohawk Bowl promises a thrilling evening of sportsmanship and community pride.
