Donald Dicklich, Former St. Louis County Auditor, Dies at 74

URGENT UPDATE: Donald Dicklich, a respected figure in Minnesota’s public service and former St. Louis County Auditor, has passed away at the age of 74 after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. He died on October 27, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to his community and family.

Born to Bogdan “Bob” Dicklich and Mildred Kelsey Dicklich, Don was a proud graduate of Hibbing Schools, class of 1971, where he was an integral member of the 1970 State Championship Hockey Team that secured third place. His educational journey continued at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Business Degree, followed by an MBA.

In June 1975, he married Mary Zanoni, and together they raised two daughters, Gina Marie and Dawn Michele. His career began at U.S. Steel Corp., where he held various roles, including at the Mintac Mine and Plant and in the USS Great Lakes Fleet.

Transitioning to healthcare administration, Don spent over a decade at what is now known as Essentia Health. His leadership skills led him to the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board, where he served as Administrative Manager/CFO. In a prominent role, he was appointed St. Louis County Auditor-Treasurer, winning three successive terms and serving nearly 15 years until his retirement in January 2019.

Don was deeply involved in his church community, contributing his time on several boards, as President of the Men’s Club, and as a long-standing choir member. His commitment to service and leadership has left a lasting impact on those who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents: Rade and Milica Dicklich, and Riley and Emilie Kelsey. He is survived by his daughters, Gina Lund and Dawn Verdone, siblings Ron Dicklich (Samantha), Diana Broste (Paul), and Cherilyn McEnery, along with five nieces and a nephew, eight grandnieces and nephews, and his beloved granddaughter, Kennady Lund, who he cherished deeply.

As the community mourns the loss of a devoted leader and family man, tributes are beginning to pour in, highlighting his contributions and the profound impact he made throughout his life. His family has expressed gratitude for the support they have received during this difficult time.
