Approximately 9,000 state employees in Ohio received notifications regarding potential furloughs due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. As part of the state’s compliance with collective bargaining agreements, a notice period of 14 days is required before any funding interruptions can take effect. DAS has indicated that if the U.S. Senate reaches a clean continuing resolution within the two-week period, the furlough notices may become null and void. Kathleen C. Madden, Director of the Department of Administrative Services, expressed hope for a swift resolution, stating, “While we hope for a resolution from Washington soon, we must prepare for the potential impact on our workforce in the coming weeks should the shutdown continue.” The department will continue to assess the situation daily and will provide more concrete information if required.
In addition to the state employee furlough notices, Ohio leaders are taking measures to support residents affected by the shutdown. They announced plans to allocate up to $25 million for food assistance programs, anticipating a suspension of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to federal funding issues.
