NIU’s Electric Microcar Set for Production After Final Testing

UPDATE: NIU’s innovative electric microcar, the NIUMM, is officially moving toward production after successfully completing its final homologation tests. This urgent development was announced during the prestigious EICMA 2025 in Milan, where the microcar was showcased to eager attendees.

The NIUMM is designed specifically for urban living, making it an ideal option for city residents and especially for those who already own NIU scooters, as it utilizes the same batteries. The microcar achieves a range of approximately 70 km (about 43 miles) and can reach speeds of up to 45 km/h (around 28 mph), adhering to the maximum speed regulations for L6e quadricycles.

The compact design of the NIUMM allows for an extra pair of battery slots, enabling owners to nearly double their range, a feature particularly appealing to urban commuters. As the NIU Director of International, Sieghart Michielsen, confirmed, the company is now clearing the last hurdles ahead of the vehicle’s commercial launch.

L6e quadricycles have become increasingly popular in Europe, providing a lightweight, maneuverable alternative for navigating crowded city streets. With a maximum weight limit of 425 kg (excluding batteries), these vehicles can be driven with just a moped license in many regions, making them accessible to a wider audience, including teenagers and older adults seeking easy transportation solutions.

The success of similar models, such as the Citroen Ami and Renault Twizy, highlights a growing demand for these small, electric vehicles. The Citroen Ami, priced at approximately €7,000, has gained a cult following due to its minimalist design and flexible usage options through subscriptions and car-sharing services.

As urban areas continue to embrace car-light lifestyles, the introduction of the NIUMM could not come at a more crucial time. While pricing and exact availability are still pending, it is clear that NIU is poised to tap into the increasing momentum for compact electric vehicles.

Stay tuned for further announcements as NIU prepares for the NIUMM’s market debut. This development marks a significant step toward more sustainable urban mobility solutions.
