UPDATE: Rivian just unveiled critical details about the highly anticipated 2026 R2 midsize SUV, set to hit the roads in the first half of 2026. This announcement, made in their latest shareholder letter, reveals groundbreaking technology that could transform the electric vehicle landscape.
The R2 will feature an advanced energy management control module (EMCM), consolidating vital technologies, including the inverter, into a single unit. This innovative module incorporates a bidirectional vehicle-to-home (V2H) charger, allowing owners to draw power from their vehicle to use at home, significantly enhancing the utility of this sub-$50,000 EV. Rivian emphasizes that this feature offers a “cost-effective power storage solution” for consumers.
In a notable leap forward, the R2 will utilize the new 4695 battery cell, boasting “six times” the energy capacity of the current 2170 cells used in Rivian’s R1 models. While the exact kWh capacity of the R2’s battery is still under wraps, it is projected to deliver an impressive 330-mile range. Production of these advanced cells is scheduled to commence in the U.S. by LG Energy Solution starting in 2027, a move aimed at mitigating tariff concerns and managing costs effectively.
Rivian’s Normal, Illinois factory has successfully completed the assembly of the R2 body shop and its expansive 1.1 million square foot general assembly facility. Additionally, a 1.2 million square foot supplier park and logistics center have been established to support R2 production. Rivian anticipates beginning assembly in early 2026, with plans to deliver up to 155,000 units annually. The first validation builds are expected to roll off the line by the end of 2025, marking a significant milestone for the company.
This latest announcement not only highlights Rivian’s commitment to innovation but also reflects the growing demand for electric vehicles that provide both functionality and sustainability. As consumers increasingly seek eco-friendly options, Rivian’s developments in the R2 may set new standards in the EV market.
Stay tuned for more updates as Rivian continues to advance its production timeline and technology. The future of electric driving is on the horizon.
