Safeway Holiday Ice Rink Opens in Union Square, SF, Today!

URGENT UPDATE: The Safeway Holiday Ice Rink has officially opened today in Union Square, San Francisco, kicking off its 18th season of festive fun! With skating available through January 19, this beloved seasonal attraction is set to draw crowds looking to embrace the holiday spirit right in the heart of the bustling shopping district.

As the temperature drops, the ice rink glistens, inviting families and friends to create joyful memories. The rink is open daily from 10 AM to 11 PM, with special hours on New Year’s Eve, closing at 9:30 PM. Tickets are priced at $20 for adults and $15 for children ages eight and under.

Visitors can expect a lively atmosphere, featuring not just skating but a lineup of special events, including dance parties, lessons, and even drag performances. Local businesses are gearing up for an influx of customers, with the Last Drop Tavern transforming into a holiday hotspot complete with festive decorations and seasonal cocktails. “It’s the most festive and vibrant time of the year for us,” said Nnan Chotiphanomvivat, general manager of the tavern, highlighting the excitement surrounding the holiday season.

The festive mood is further enhanced by the Beacon Grand Hotel, which will host its Holiday Tea at The Post Room, offering delectable treats like scones and eggnog cheesecake starting the day after Thanksgiving.

Union Square is also witnessing an economic revival, with new openings enhancing its appeal. This year, the area welcomes a six-month pop-up from Dandelion Chocolate and a rotating holiday food market, part of the city’s Vacant to Vibrant program aimed at revitalizing downtown spaces, as reported by KTVU.

The excitement around the ice rink’s reopening is palpable, with Marisa Rodriguez, CEO of the Union Square Alliance, expressing that this year’s festivities are particularly special as the district continues to rebound. The anticipated revitalization of Macy’s flagship store will only add to the commercial draw, with Rodriguez affirming, “This is an iconic location in San Francisco. Why not reimagine it and meet the moment?”

With the rink now open, Union Square is the place to be for holiday cheer. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early to secure their spots and enjoy all the seasonal offerings. Don’t miss out on the chance to experience the magic of skating in one of San Francisco’s most vibrant locations!
